Mariology

Our current work-in-progress, "Mariology," explores the Virgin Mary as a source of faith and comfort--especially in these harrowing times--and as a weapon of control and colonization. In a mythical 5th grade classroom, indoctrination gives way to fantasy and rebellion, in a rambunctious spectacle of live music, movement, text, and video. "Mariology" disrupts ingrained knowledge and inspires imagination about Mary's roles in systems of gender, power and faith, in order to open possibilities for personal liberation and agency. The piece incorporates community stories and perspectives about the Virgin, and includes an interactive installation which houses an archive of information and inspiration.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: We acknowledge the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of the unceded territory currently named Los Angeles. We pay our respects to their elders past, present, and emerging, and we acknowledge the violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us here today. See the website, Mapping Indigenous LA, (https://mila.ss.ucla.edu), an invaluable resource for the layered stories and histories of Indigenous Los Angeles.
